Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health, under   the Department of Medical Services, Ministry of Public Health,   was formerly founded as the Department of Pediatrics in Women’s       Hospital (Rajvithi Hospital) with only 25 beds on 16 April 1951.

Two years later, the department with a good reputation expanded services by separating child patients from adult patients and inpatients as well as by increasing child beds to 34 and infant beds to 36.

By then, the Department of Pediatrics was divided into 2 departments: general pediatric and pediatric surgery departments. With an awareness of the department’s importance, Field Marshal P. Piboonsongkarm approved a budget for Pediatric Department building construction. Following this, the Department of Pediatrics was changed to “Children’s Hospital”, but still under the Women’s Hospital. On 24 June 1954, Field Marshal P. Piboonsongkarm presided over the opening ceremony for Children’s Hospital’s buildings which included a directorate building and 2 inpatient buildings with 137 beds. Inevitably, our responsibilities were also extended.

On 19 March 1959, there was another new building named “Narisara Chakrabongse” by H.R.H. Prince Chulachakrabongse. This new building was established especially for benefits in the field of study and research of children’s illnesses.

On 7 June of the same year, Saeng Roong Staff’s Hall of Residence was set up as the second house for doctors who were on duties and interested in training and practice in pediatric field.

As our outstanding and reliable service was more broadly acceptable, within 5 years there were outpatients and inpatients increasing from 36,212 to 119,966 and from 2,744 to 7,446 in order. In 1974, a 3-year pediatric residency training program was officially available.

Furthermore, by Royal Decree organizing Department of Medical Services, Ministry of Public Health, B.E. 2516 (1973), Children’s Hospital with 18 doctors and 70 nurses was separated from the Women’s Hospital and became a division given complete authority to administrate itself under the Ministry of Public Health on 3 December 1974

On 11 February 1978, Service Centre, a 3-storey building, was completely established for the Services Support Department in Children’s Hospital.

Of the same year, on 24 March an 8-storey building was constructed to be a new directorate building in place of the old one. The new directorate building consisted of various wards, for instance, outpatient ward, nursing ward, EENT ward, infant dental ward, etc. Besides that, there were other management departments such as financial department, administrative department, nurse’s office, Children’s Hospital Foundation office, conference room and so forth. On 10 December 1982, H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the opening ceremony for the directorate building known as New Building”. Later, the New Building was graciously re-named Sayam Boroma Rajakumari Building” by H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

In 1984, the number of outpatients had increased to 289,796; in the same way, number of inpatients had increased to 9,157. Consequently, doctors had to increase to 42. This included pediatricians, surgeons, radiologists, otolaryngologists, ophthalmologists, anesthesiologists, orthopedists, 6 dentists and 5 pharmacists. To facilitate these doctors, a 7-storey hall of residence was thus established behind the hospital.

Likewise, in 1992, Children's Hospital received a budget to build a 12-storey inpatient building to expand the hospital's work. On 17 August 1992, the 12-storey building was named "Mahitala Dhibesra Building". On 25 August of the same year, H.R.H. Princess Galyani Vadhana presided over the ceremony of laying a cornerstone at Mahitala Dhibesra Building.
Mahitala Dhibesra Building was completely established and opened the doors to serve medical service to patients since October 1996, and H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the official opening ceremony for Mahitala Dhibesra Building on 17 April 1998.

On 4 October 1996, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit granted the Children’s Hospital the new name
